Just see the last articles by professor Luis Umbalino, or the works by professor Rainer E. Zimmermann already published in this same architectonics review some months ago. Also, the change in the cancer therapies going from the study of the tumor to the study of the methastasis indicates profound mental and cultural changes. We are not aware of the significance of these changes, as we have not been aware of the origin of the innovative forces in the Bauhaus, thanks to their inter-disciplinary, inter-cultural and inter-artistic dimensions. We should have began to understand that architecture is not isolated knowledge, it depends upon a physical, social and cultural environment where architecture and urban planning can develop in a lot of directions, and improve it. We are at the starting point of a new concept and a new reality of the human placeness. New in the globality and digitalization, but also new in a different experience of space and time that, similar to the Einstein revolution in astronomy, changes dramatically the conditions of cities and landscapes, again with realities until now ignored by humanity. Architects will need to change in order to survive. They have always survived. They should look to the innovative Bauhaus School looking for the dialogical and interactive structure of that school, totally ignored and rejected afterwards in USA by some of the architects that made this school possible. Architects quickly renounce and fight again their own professors in theory in practice. We need more authenticity and flexibility in order to survive. The last book of Richard Sennett is a good starting point. Regarded by many authors as divine entities very close to humans, humans of a different kind who, despite being divine, used to fight one another and could behave irrationally and unfairly. Their lives and stories still have much to teach us today. The various places in Camilo's existential and professional territory are shown through a nonlinear visual narrative, in book format, where fiction and reality mingle in an imaginative way. The book thus links the image, especially photography, with the text to create a visual discourse where there is room for coherence, and for paradox and play, too, the oxymoron. This work tells us a part of Camilo's unique story, imaginatively and symbolically disclosing his origins, travel memories, life experiences, and architectural designs, and where his works are not the focus, but a leimotif that ponctuates the entire book, his work linked with his person. Mário Chaves CASA DE JANUS Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa 2021 At Janus' house, the past, the present and the future fit. In the past, society was invented, consciousness was discovered, finiteness was perceived, civilization was founded. In the present we have the paradox that the history of the past does not legitimize the present and does not guarantee the future. And Janus looks compassionately at the circumstance, in which the link of continuity, has breaks that generate ruptures of paradigms, about which revolutions take place. Everything stays as it is, leaving nothing as it was. We are witnessing a new present from a future, which Janus already knows. And in it, it awaits us because it knows that we will get there in any and all ways. It is a new time ahead. Architecture has been participatory, since the beginning of history, in the construction of this discourse, successively disruptive and dystopian, in the construction of a utopia, successively desired, even if at the cost of great cleavages. We are almost always present in architecture. It is where we sleep and eat and work and gather; it is what we travel to and what we journey between. But how aware are we of the effect it has on us; on how we move and think and feel? We know that architecture has a lasting, even irreversible, effect on the environment. But do we understand how these things are all connected? Aware: Architecture and Senses, created by the Danish architecture and research studio 3XN GXN and the Danish Architecture Center, explores the connections between people and space, inviting visitors to experience and understand it for themselves. Rather than showcase the studio’s body of work, the exhibition invites visitors into six immersive, large-scale installations where the emphasis is not on form or function, but on the visitors’ experience in space. These experiences are the fundamental concepts of architecture: not brick, concrete, or steel, but relations between bodies and spaces, between spatial atmospheres and human emotions. Architecture can thrill you or awe you, calm you down or foster connection. It can be caring and protective – or stimulate your curiosity, igniting idle senses and unfolding unseen worlds. The installations in Aware play on ideas and forms that 3XN GXN explores in its work, nudging the visitor to realise and question how space can define atmospheres and shape moods. How, for example, a staircase’s function may be to connect different levels, but its liminal atmosphere encourages unplanned connection. How timber and organic forms relate back to our deeper natures, giving us visceral connection to the natural world even as our time is increasingly spent indoors. How the tweaking of typical architectural elements makes the familiar unfamiliar, coaxing us around the corner. Each of the spaces in Aware emphasise and twist what we expect from architecture, giving us new insight into how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Lighting by Jesper Kongshaug and soundscapes by Mesmer further emphasise the temporal, experiential quality of the exhibition. Once visitors have wound their way through the installations, they arrive to the exhibition’s close: a behind the scenes look at some of the research, projects, and developments that informed the spaces they have just left behind. Made possible with support from Arup, this behind the scenes look at complete and ongoing work by 3XN GXN and Arup offers insight into how architects and allied professionals work together to create environments that stand the test of time and promote wellbeing for both people and planet. MICHEL TOUSSAINT Arquitecto (ESBAL1973) Nascido em 1946, Luanda - Angola. Doutorado em Teoria da Arquitetura (FAUTL 2009). Professor (ESBAL/FAUTL/FAUL), U Lusíada Lisboa, ISCTE, AUL, jubilado em 2016. Colaborou ou trabalhou em parceria com Luís Possolo, Fernando Silva, Maurício de Vasconcelos (GPA), Vasco Vieira da Costa, Troufa Real e Luís Bissau. Publicou bem mais de uma centena de artigos em revistas de Arquitetura e publicações universitárias, bem como diversos livros ou partes, tendo coordenado alguns. Mais recentemente, tem colaborado com a editora A+A books como autor e/ou coordenador científico de diversas monografias e guias de Arquitetura. Politécnica de Cataluña. Professor Associado na Faculdade de Arquitectura e Artes da Universidade Lusíada em Lisboa. Director da revista arq/a, revista de arquitectura e arte em dois períodos distintos. Co-autor da série de 26 programas para televisão ( RTP2) –“Atelier D´Arquitectura”. Director/coordenador da revista "Sebentas d´Arquitectura". Tem realizado várias conferências sobre temas de arquitectura, ou sobre a sua obra projectada ou construída, em Portugal e no estrangeiro. Autor de vários textos de crítica e teoria de arquitectura, alguns dos quais publicados em livro. É coordenador do atelier "Victor Neves Arquitectura e Urbanismo, Lda", com sede em Lisboa e fundado em 1984. A partir de 1985 tem desenvolvido a sua actividade como profissional liberal, sendo responsável por vários projectos na área de arquitectura, urbanismo e design, vários dos quais publicados. Co-curador da exposição “Lucien Hervé - Flashes do Homem na Cidade Moderna", no Centro Cultural de Cascais. ISABEL ALVARENGA Arquitecta Especializada em Urbanismo e Planeamento Urbano. Recentemente, especializou-se também em Gestão do Património Cultural. Embora trabalhe intermitentemente em Projecto de Arquitectura, desenvolveu a sua carreira maioritariamente como funcionária pública, desempenhando funções sucessivamente nos municípios do Barreiro, Funchal, Santa Cruz e Cascais. Nestes municípios, integrou ou coordenou as equipas que elaboraram os respectivos Planos Directores ou as suas revisões. Serviu também no Governo Regional da Madeira. Actualmente, é Assessora do Conselho Directivo da Fundação D. Luís I, Coordenadora do Centro Cultural de Cascais, Diretora Executiva, na qualidade de representante da Câmara Municipal de Cascais, da Associação Teatro de Cascais e Coordenadora do gabinete de apoio ao Director Municipal da Cultura. A sensibilidade com que Lucien Hervé fotografou projetos arquitetónicos assinados pelos mestres modernistas como Le Corbusier e Oscar Niemeyer é um marco na história da fotografia. Mas, como revela esta exposição, a sua obra fotográfica não é apenas uma notável reportagem sobre edifícios icónicos. É também relevante pelos seus aspetos estéticos, artísticos e sociológicos. Lucien Hervé é um dos raros fotógrafos que combinava uma visão artística e até filosófica da fotografia com a Arquitetura e com a cidade do século XX. Lucien Hervé's sensibility in his photography of architectural projects by modernist masters like Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer are a mark in the history of photographty. However, this exhibition shows its photography is not only about iconic buildings. It it also relevant for its aesthetic, artistic and sociological aspects. Lucien Hervé is one of the rare photographers that combines an artistic vision and a photographic philosophy with architecture and the city of the XXth century.
